Therapy works best when folk have an understanding of an internal problem that is amenable to change. However, sometimes a period of exploration is necessary so that greater self-understanding is reached.
Psychotherapy is effective as a treatment for a wide range of presenting problems and symptoms.
Clients may suffer low mood, anxiety that manifests in a variety of forms and contexts, self-defeating behaviours, relationship difficulties including inability to form trusting, emotionally close relationships. Commonly it is our early in life ‘adapt to survive’ strategies which become ingrained and cause suffering later in life.
What was once necessary or helpful in childhood often becomes self-limiting in adult life. The shutting down of parts of oneself, necessary early on, becomes a defining feature of one’s unfulfilled life, later on.
Revisiting and revising these patterns is the basis of much work in therapy.
Couples Therapy
Sessions with couples usually begin with understand each partner’s perception of difficulties. We examine the interactional patterns; painful and difficult moments to get a better understanding of each person’s desires and sensitivities.
I encourage in-the-moment connection and openness and to build on new ways of engaging that are transferable outside of the therapy room.
